Unique device identification (UDI) is a unique global identifier assigned to medical devices and accessories. It is used to identify and track medical devices throughout their life cycle, from manufacturing to sales to disposal. The UDI consists of two parts:
- UDI-DI or Device Identifier is a unique identifier assigned to a specific medical device
- UDI-PI, or Production Identifier, is a unique identifier for a particular medical device
The UDI is used in a variety of applications, e.g: Traceability, Market Analysis, Product management, Patient Safety.
UDI is an important tool for ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical devices. This is required by law in many countries, including the United States, the European Union and Japan.
